Catalina Foothills Students Introduce Original Musical
A group of students at Catalina Foothills High School are debuting Double Time, an all-new student-written, student-produced musical. Katie Pawloski, Zach Pittner, Fox Foster, and Bryan Zhang worked to write, compose, and orchestrate the musical, under the direction of senior Kiera Kuehnle. The production is the group’s senior capstone project and has been in the works since the summer of 2024.
“There’s always something so difficult between balancing perfection and time… so you really have to prioritize what’s the most important in every song and in every scene,” said composer Zach Pittner in an interview with KGUN9’s Andrew Christiansen.
The production also features a live band, composed of members of the Foothills Falcon Band program, one of the largest band programs in the state.
Double Time, performed by the Advanced Theatre class at the high school, is set in the 1940s. It centers around Otto, a spy investigating the murder of famed Hollywood director Richard Clark. When Clark’s assistant, Connie, and the studio head, Herb, realize that they need to hide Clark’s death from the public, they hire Otto to pose as the director while simultaneously investigating the case. The main question in the audience’s mind: Who wanted Richard Clark dead? Was it Josephine, the actress? Valentina, the seductress? Connie, the director’s assistant? Herb, the studio head? Or was it Otto, the spy?

With music that draws comparisons to Glenn Miller’s “In the Mood,” and other jazz classics, this production is a testament to the strength and talent of the theatre program at Catalina Foothills. It is also a brilliant representation of how dedication, over six months of it, can create a show that hundreds of audience members will undoubtedly enjoy.
Multiple students involved, including Pawloski and Pittner, will receive the Arizona State Seal of Arts Proficiency on their high school diplomas, and were awarded a Catalina Foothills STAR Award at the district’s board meeting on April 22nd.
Double Time runs April 24th-26th, 2025. Tickets are available at cfhs.booktix.com, where you can also find tickets to Falcon Theatre’s final production of the year, Totally Murder, student directed by Vivianna Colson.
